You will be contacted within 4 - 8 weeks of the Immigrant Visa Section completing action on their application with a date for the formal visa interview.

All applicants registered are required to visit the Consulate in person for a formal visa interview with a U.S. consular officer. All applicants, including children, must pay a non-refundable non-immigrant visa application fee. The fee must be paid before the interview!  There is an additional fee for the medical examination. The visa processing fee cannot be refunded if the applicant is refused a visa.

Visa processing takes about 10 workdays if all required documents are presented. The visa will be returned to you by German registered mail. On the day of the visa interview you will be required to purchase postage stamps for an envelope for the return of your documents once visa processing has been completed.

 The following supporting documents should be brought to the K-1 fiancee visa interview when being interviewed at Frankfurt, Germany.

1. PASSPORTS: valid at least 6 months beyond the validity of the K-1 visa

2. BIRTH CERTIFICATES: a certified copy showing the date of birth and the names of the parents.

3. POLICE CERTIFICATES: from countries where the applicant has resided for at least six months since the age of 16.

4. COURT AND PRISON RECORDS: certified copy

5. MILITARY RECORDS: certified copy

6. PHOTOGRAPHS

7. EVIDENCE OF SUPPORT: proof that the applicant will not become a public charge. 

8. DIVORCE CERTIFICATES AND CUSTODY LETTERS FOR K-2 children: certified copy

9. TRANSLATIONS AND CERTIFIED COPIES

10. EVIDENCE OF RELATIONSHIP: proof of relationship with the petitioner.

Upon receipt of the visa applicant’s file from the National Visa Center in New Hampshire, the Immigrant Visa Unit of the U.S. Consulate will send the applicant a confirmation notification.  Upon receipt of this notification, download and complete the following forms and follow the steps outlined below.

The following forms are required for the The K and V visa packet:

• form DS-230 Part I (pdf)
• form DS-156 (in duplicate)
• form DS-156K (pdf) (only required for fiancé(e) visa applicants)
• form DS-157 (pdf)
• document checklist.

The biographic data form DS-230-I (pdf) should be completed for each person applying for a visa, regardless of age. The form may be photocopied if insufficient copies are received for each family member. The DS-230-I (pdf) should be completed and returned immediately to the Immigrant Visa Unit at the following address:

in order for the Consulate to begin the administrative processing of the application. Concurrently, complete and return the form DS-156 and DS-156K (only required for fiancé(e) visa applicants), and DS-157 if applicable.

Do not sign the DS-156K (only required for fiancé(e) visa applicants). The forms must be signed before a consular officer on the day of the visa interview. Failure to return the DS-230-I promptly will delay the processing of the application.

Assemble all of the relevant documents required in support of your application and forward the document checklist to the Immigrant Visa Unit. Don’t mail the documents to the Consulate! You will be required to furnish the original of all documents and one copy on the day of the formal visa interview and medical examination. 

• Evidence of Support: An applicant for a K or V visa is required to file an Affidavit of Support, at the time of the interview proving that he or she is not likely at any time to become a public charge.

On receipt of all requested forms and the document checklist, the Immigrant Visa Unit will perform any additional processing which may be required and advise you concerning the scheduling of the medical examination and the appointment for the formal visa interview.

Note: The Immigrant Visa Unit must be in receipt of the approved petition from the National Visa Center before beginning the administrative processing of the application. While you are waiting for notification from the Immigrant Visa Unit that they are ready to begin processing your application, you may wish to begin assembling the documents you will be required to furnish on the day of your visa interview. This may expedite your application somewhat as certain documents may take a while to obtain.
